Hue Jackson praises Baker Mayfield for exceeding expectations
Baker Mayfield may not be in line to open the season as the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback, but that does not mean he’s not making an impression with the team.
The No. 1 overall draft pick has been working hard to learn the team’s offense and get to know his teammates entering his rookie season. Browns head coach Hue Jackson even praised Mayfield on Sunday for exceeding expectations.
“Baker Mayfield has been everything I thought a quarterback should be for our organization thus far,” Jackson said Sunday, via Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot. “He’s doing the things that we want him to do the way we want him to do it and he’s exceeding those things because he’s putting in the time. He doesn’t have a pride or (arrogance) any kind of way. His thing is, ‘you guys tell me what you need me to do and I’m going to do it’ and that’s what he’s done since he’s walked in the building and that’s exciting, because that’s a player that’s eager to learn.”
Mayfield has been working with the second-team offense and Tyrod Taylor with the starters. Drew Stanton is also part of the quarterbacks’ room in camp. The three have been working hard and putting in a lot of time, according to Jackson, which should pay off. That’s a big difference from what the Browns saw the last time they invested a first-round pick on a quarterback.
