Talks between Jason Pierre-Paul and Giants break down

Talks between the New York Giants and Jason Pierre-Paul have broken down according to reports, and it looks like the defensive end will go without signing his tender for the time being.

JPP finally went in for a physical and medical evaluation with the Giants on Monday, two months after he severely injured his hand in a fireworks accident on July 4. He underwent surgery to have a finger amputated from his right hand, and he kept the Giants in the dark about his medical status.

The New York Daily News reports that Pierre-Paul and the Giants parted ways Tuesday without the lineman signing his $14.8 million franchise tender because of a difference of opinion concerning his readiness to play.

Since 53-man rosters have already been submitted, it is too late to place JPP on the non-football injury list and activate him after six weeks. The money from the tender will still count against the Giants’ salary cap even if he is not playing. The Giants could choose to put Pierre-Paul on the non-football injury list and not have to pay his salary, but he would not be able to play at all this season if they do. Alternatively, they could have him sign his tender when he is ready to play, and then he would earn a pro-rated version of the franchise tender. It seems like both sides are aiming for the latter.
