Report: Jay Cutler’s career with Bears ‘likely over’ after season-ending surgery

Chicago Bears head coach John Fox announced on Thursday that Jay Cutler will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, and there is a sense that the quarterback may have played his last game with the team.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter speculates that the Bears will not bring Cutler back next season.

Jay Cutler will have surgery Saturday and go on IR. Season over and Bears career likely over.

Cutler’s future with the Bears could ultimately come down to whether the team keeps Fox for another season. It seems clear that Cutler is not Fox’s guy, and that became even more evident when the coach essentially admitted Brian Hoyer was going to keep the starting job over Cutler before Hoyer fractured his arm.

But if the Bears fire Fox, they may decide to keep Cutler for at least another season. If you read this numbers breakdown of Cutler’s situation with the team, you get the idea that bringing him back might not be the worst decision.
