Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry spent the majority of the season on the hot seat, but things improved toward the end of the season. Despite that, Barry’s job, at least for now, does not appear to be safe.
Asked about Barry’s status at his season-ending press conference Monday, Packers coach Matt LaFleur pushed aside the question and refused to say either way whether Barry would return. That is a change from previous years.
“Just going to go through the process at my own pace,” LaFleur said, via Matt Schneidman of The Athletic.
The response suggests some uncertainty over Barry’s status, especially since the defensive coordinator is under contract for next season. When the Packers were 6-8, he appeared to be on his way out, but things improved at the end of the year, with Barry’s unit holding the San Francisco 49ers to 24 points in Saturday’s NFC Divisional loss.
Barry has been Green Bay’s defensive coordinator since 2021. He has also been a defensive coordinator with Detroit and Washington during his career.
