Johnny Manziel has checked himself into a rehabilitation facility.
Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that Manziel entered treatment last week. Manziel’s publicist, Denise Michaels, released a statement Monday on behalf of the Cleveland Browns quarterback.
“Brad Beckworth, friend and advisor to Manziel and his family, has confirmed that Johnny entered treatment on Wednesday. Johnny knows there are areas in which he needs to improve in order to be a better family member, friend and teammate and he thought the off-season was the right time to take this step.
“On behalf of Johnny and his family, we’re asking for privacy until he rejoins the team in Cleveland.”
Details of the program are unknown at this point.
Some of Manziel’s teammates, who chose to remain anonymous, recently said that the former Texas A&M star showed a lack of commitment and preparation during his rookie season. Manziel even admitted that he needs to take his job more seriously going forward.
Last month, ESPN’s Skip Bayless came under fire for calling Manziel an alcoholic. We know Manziel loves to party, and this photo has raised questions about whether he has used drugs.
Only a story about Manziel checking into rehab could overshadow the Monday after the Super Bowl.
