The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has expressed his desire for his city to become the sporting capital of the world. One big step toward his plan is to bring the Super Bowl across the pond.
Before his re-election as mayor last month, Khan vowed to make a push to bring more major sporting events such as the Super Bowl and WrestleMania to London.
On Thursday, Khan reiterated his desire to host American football’s most important game.
“The Super Bowl is really important for us. We have a number of American football games and I want it to come here because we want American sports fans in Europe to come to London to watch them, not just go to America,” Khan said, via The Athletic’s Caoimhe O’Neill and Omar Garrick.
London has built a strong relationship with the NFL over the past two decades. The UK capital has hosted an NFL regular season game every year since 2007.
However, it’s quite a massive jump to go from hosting a few regular season contests to the Super Bowl.
The NFL’s marquee event has never been held outside of the United States. It’s hard to imagine that ever changing.
The venues for the next three Super Bowls have already been determined. Next year’s Super Bowl will be held in Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, La. The Super Bowl then moves to California in both 2026 (Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara) and 2027 (SoFi Stadium in Inglewood).
