Lovie Smith fired by Buccaneers
Lovie Smith’s tenure as head coach of the Buccaneers has ended after two seasons.
Smith was hired by Tampa Bay in January of last year. The team went 2-14 in 2014 and finished the 2015 season at 6-10. While it was an improvement over the previous year, it wasn’t enough for Smith to keep his job.
The following statement from co-chairman Joel Glazer appeared on the Buccaneers’ website.
“After careful consideration, we informed Lovie that we have decided to make a change. I want to thank Lovie for his hard work and dedication to the Buccaneers during his time here. This decision was difficult on a variety of levels. I am disappointed that we were not more successful these past few seasons, but we are committed to doing what is necessary to give our fans the winning team they deserve. As we move forward, General Manager Jason Licht will oversee the process for finding our next head coach.”
Among those surprised by the move is atleast one member of the Buccaneers coaching staff.
#Bucs coach to me right now: “Is this true? We all just met with Lovie individually today. This is strange. I wonder what happened?"

With Smith now out, Tampa Bay will begin the search for its fourth head coach since 2008. Whoever takes over will have an offense led by Jameis Winson, a resurgent Doug Martin, and Mike Evans while the defense boasts Lavonte Davis and Gerald McCoy.
