Matt Barkley promoted to Bears’ active roster

Matt Barkley

Matt Barkley was promoted to the Chicago Bears’ active roster in response to Jay Cutler’s thumb injury.

Cutler suffered an injury to his thumb on “Monday Night Football” against the Eagles and will miss a few weeks. His injury means Brian Hoyer will be the team’s new starting quarterback. It also means Barkley gets a bump from third-string and the practice squad to second string and the active roster.

Barkley was previously with the Arizona Cardinals and only got picked up by the Bears on Sept. 4 after he was waived at the end of training camp.

The former USC quarterback has thrown 50 passes in the NFL — all with the Eagles — and has committed five turnovers with no touchdowns.
