Matt Forte felt ‘cracking and popping’ in knee, will undergo MRI

The New York Jets have already been eliminated from playoff contention, and now their starting running back may be done for the year as well.

Two-time Pro Bowler Matt Forte was forced from Sunday’s Week 14 overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers with a knee injury and said afterwards that it was hyperextended, per Rich Cimini of ESPN. Forte apparently doesn’t think that he suffered ligament damage but did admit to feeling “cracking and popping” in the knee and will undergo an MRI.

Even if the results come back clean, the 4-9 Jets would have little reason to play the 31-year-old Forte, who has a history of knee issues, in the final three games of the season and put him at risk for further injury. Should the Jets decide to shut him down, Forte would finish the 2016 campaign, his first away from Chicago, with decent totals of 792 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.
