Michael Irvin is having some fun at Paul George’s expense this week.
The retired Dallas Cowboys great Irvin appeared on the “It Is What It Is” podcast. During the episode, the topic of the Philadelphia 76ers star George’s recent 25-game suspension came up.
Irvin reacted to George’s “mental health” explanation for the suspension and joked that he should have used that line when he himself was arrested for drugs back in the 1990s.
“I should’ve tried that when I was in the hotel room” said Irvin. “When them cops hit the door of that hotel room … ‘I got some mental health issues!’ … I wish I could’ve used that! ‘Y’all gotta leave now… I’m working through some mental health issues!’”
The Pro Football Hall of Famer Irvin was arrested in 1996 on two charges of drug possession after being found along with three others (including two female companions) in an Irving, Texas hotel room that had allegedly been littered with cocaine and marijuana. Irvin would end up pleading no contest to the charges, resulting in the case ultimately being cleared from his record.
As for George, he drew his 25-game suspension from the NBA over the weekend for a violation of the league’s Anti-Drug Policy. George later blamed the failed drug test on “an improper medication” that he was taking to manage his mental health.
In the days since, Charles Barkley has come out and questioned the circumstances of George’s “fishy” suspension. Others like Irvin however are a little bit less understanding about the whole situation.
