Mike Tomlin answers whether Steelers will give Aaron Rodgers a deadline

The Pittsburgh Steelers are still waiting to hear whether Aaron Rodgers wants to be their starting quarterback in 2025, but it does not sound like they will give the star quarterback a deadline to make a decision.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin spoke with reporters at the start of the NFL’s owners meetings on Sunday in Palm Beach, Fla. As expected, he was asked several questions about Pittsburgh’s pursuit of Rodgers. Tomlin confirmed that the Steelers met with Rodgers last week and said they had a “really good day” with the former MVP.

Tomlin was also asked if there is a specific deadline for when the Steelers would like to know if Rodgers is going to sign with them or not. The coach said he does not think imposing a deadline would accomplish anything.

“Not to my knowledge. You know, I don’t know that we’ve approached it from a deadline perspective,” Tomlin told the media. “Certainly, as I mentioned, you’d like to have settled circumstances. But, you know, deadlines don’t often bring that to a head.”

Is there a deadline for Aaron Rodgers?

Mike Tomlin: "Not to my knowledge. You know, I don't know that we've approached it from a deadline perspective. Certainly, as I mentioned, you'd like to have settled circumstances. But, you know, deadlines don't often bring that to a head."

Tomlin was then asked whether he would like to have the situation sorted prior to the NFL Draft, which is in a month. He said he “hadn’t thought a lot about it.”

It is unclear why Rodgers has taken so long to make a decision. The only other known team that offered him a starting job was the New York Giants, and they have since signed Russell Wilson. There has been some talk that Rodgers is contemplating retirement, which he has done in the past.

The Steelers have the 21st overall pick in a weak quarterback draft, so they may not be worried about getting an answer from Rodgers before then. They could turn their attention to another veteran if Rodgers winds up turning them down.
