NFL is investigating Giants’ handling of Jaxson Dart in Week 6

New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart briefly left his team’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night to be evaluated for a concussion, and the NFL is now looking into whether the protocol was adhered to properly.

Dart was hit by multiple defenders when he was sacked during the third quarter of the Giants’ 34-17 Week 6 win over the Eagles at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. He was shaken up on the play and was tended to by trainers on the field, which led to him being removed from the game and checked for a concussion.

Russell Wilson took over for a few plays (and was met with boos from fans) before Dart was cleared and returned.

On Friday, the NFL announced that there will be a joint review with the NFLPA to determine whether the Giants followed the appropriate concussion protocol steps with Dart.

The NFL initiated a review of the application of the concussion protocol involving Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart during last night’s game against the Eagles. That review will be conducted jointly with the NFLPA under the parties’ collective bargaining agreement.

Dart did not appear to take a significant blow to the head. His helmet did not bounce off the turf, either, so it is possible a concussion spotter was simply being overcautious. You can see the play:

Teams have been fined in the past for violating the concussion protocol, so it is hardly unusual that the NFL is reviewing the play. If it is determined that the proper steps were not followed, the Giants will likely face some sort of penalty.

Dart went 17/25 for 195 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions in the upset win over Philadelphia. The rookie also rushed for 58 yards and a score. The Giants have gone 2-1 since Dart took over for Wilson as the team’s starting quarterback.
