NFL issues statement condemning Cam Newton’s sexist remarks

The NFL has weighed in on Cam Newton’s sexist comments made on Wednesday.

The league issued the following statement condemning the Carolina Panthers QB’s remarks.

“The comments are just plain wrong and disrespectful to the exceptional female reporters and all journalists who cover our league. They do not reflect the thinking of the league,” the league said in a statement, via Christine Brennan.

The league has reacted swifter than the team or QB, which have yet to apologize.

Earlier on Wednesday, Newton laughed at a female reporter for asking him a question about the way one of his receivers was running routes.

Cam Newton: “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes.”

Uh, that’s a really, really bad way to answer a legitimate question. (video via https://t.co/NOdIiKyJCb) pic.twitter.com/MaS4KVjuSV

He clearly displayed a sexist attitude and found it funny that a woman was talking football. The reporter he laughed at, Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer, says Newton was even worse towards her afterwards and did not apologize.

A Panthers spokesperson says Newton “expressed regret” over his comments.
