Strange roughing the passer calls remain a great source of frustration for defensive linemen.
Oakland Raiders lineman Maurice Hurst was the latest victim. In the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears, the Raiders appeared to intercept Chase Daniel for what would have been a key interception. Hurst, however, was called for roughing the passer.

As has been the case often, Hurst was penalized for putting his weight on the quarterback’s body. By the letter of the law, it’s a foul, but it’s understandable why pass rushers are infuriated with it. One repeat victim of these calls has called the NFL soft over their frequency.
The good news for the Raiders? Despite the foul, they held on for a 24-21 win anyway.
