Report: Randy Gregory to be evaluated by NFL doctor to determine status

Randy Gregory

Randy Gregory was reinstated by the NFL last month after he served a year-long suspension for failing multiple drug tests, and the Dallas Cowboys are hoping the star defensive end will be able to play in Week 1. As of Thursday, that was reportedly not a given.

According to Jean-Jacques Taylor of NBC Dallas Fort-Worth, Gregory was scheduled to meet with an NFL doctor on Thursday morning to “determine whether he gets a chance to start the season with the Cowboys on Sept. 9, or he gets suspended again.” It’s unclear what violation Gregory could have potentially committed that he would be facing another suspension.

Gregory is in Stage Three of the NFL’s substance abuse program, which means he must comply with the terms of his treatment plan and is subject to drug testing and evaluation from medical professionals at any time. In theory, Gregory could be suspended for slip-ups other than just failing a drug test, such as not fulfilling one of the requirements of his treatment.

Over the weekend, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported that he heard there could be “more trouble ahead” for Gregory. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones later addressed that report, and his thoughts on the subject were not all that reassuring for Cowboys fans.
