Browns have discussed signing Ray Rice

Ray Rice

Ray Rice has not played in the NFL since being released by the Baltimore Ravens last year after video of him knocking out his wife in an elevator was made public. Though he seems like an untouchable commodity because of his reputation, some teams have considered signing him.

SI reports that the Cleveland Browns are one team that has given thought to signing the running back. SI’s Don Banks says coach Mike Pettine acknowledged the team has discussed signing Rice to add a veteran to their mix.

The Browns have ties to Rice that made the possibility of adding him a consideration. Pettine coached him in Baltimore, while current Browns running backs coach Wilbert Montgomery was Rice’s position coach with the Ravens for the back’s entire career.

Rice is 28, has not played in a year, and he had a major slip in production in 2013. Rice averaged just 3.1 yards per carry as he fought through injuries all season. He has been working on repairing his image in hopes of continuing his career. Though reports have said he is receiving interest from teams, Rice has not yet come close to signing with a team.
