Robert Griffin III placed on IR with shoulder injury, will miss at least 8 weeks

Robert Griffin

The shoulder injury suffered by Cleveland Browns quarterback Robert Griffin III in Week 1 is more serious than it initially seemed.

The Browns announced on Monday that they have placed Griffin on injured reserve after medical tests determined he has a fractured bone in his left shoulder.

“It’s very unfortunate, Robert came in and has worked extremely hard to learn our offense and earn the respect of his teammates,” Browns coach Hue Jackson said. “This is a tough loss because everyone has seen how invested he has been in this team and his dedication to the work needed to improve his craft. We all know these are the realities of the NFL, injuries occur and you have to find ways to overcome them so they don’t impede your progress.”

The Browns were quick to point out that RG3 has been given the designated to return tag, which means he will miss at least eight games and can return after that.

Griffin took a hard hit in Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles (video here), but he was able to remain in the game. Veteran Josh McCown will now reclaim his old starting role.
