Ronald Gasser, the man who shot and killed former NFL running back Joe McKnight in Louisiana last week, has been arrested and charged with manslaughter.

Accoridng to ABC News, Jefferson Parish records indicate Gasser was taken into custody and charged on Monday.

Gasser, 54, shot McKnight in an alleged road rage incident last Thursday in a town roughly five miles outside of New Orleans. Police say McKnight was not armed. Gasser remained at the scene until police arrived and turned over his weapon. He admitted to fatally shooting McKnight and cooperated with the investigation, according to officials.

Gasser was taken into custody immediately after the incident and questioned, though he was released later that day and no charges were filed. A witness from the scene reportedly claimed to have seen Gasser stand over McKnight and yell “I told you don’t you (expletive) with me” before shooting the former New York Jets back while he was on the ground. Many were outraged that Gasser was released amid those circumstances, but the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said information contradicted that disturbing witness account.

Police also said there was no indication that Gasser, who is white, was motivated by racism.

Earlier this week, we learned that Gasser was named a suspect in a previous road rage incident from 2006. You can read details from that alleged incident here.
