Fitzpatrick gets the nod ahead of second-year quarterback Bryce Petty, who didn’t do much to impress in a 9-6 loss to Los Angeles a week ago.
Ultimately, it seems that Bowles went with the best quarterback he has on his roster at this point in time. Turning to Petty would have been a clear admission that the Jets are giving up on 2016, something that some players supposedly would not have been comfortable with. It’s impossible to know whether or not that was a factor. Some would have liked to see what Petty has to offer for 2017, but Bowles isn’t prepared to go that route as of yet.
