Ryan Mallett: Being cut by Texans was probably best thing for me

Ryan Mallett Texans

Ryan Mallett signed with the Baltimore Ravens this week after being cut by the Houston Texans earlier this season, and the quarterback says being let go by Houston was probably the best thing for him.

Mallett admitted after his first practice with his new team Wednesday that he acted immaturely in Houston.

“I acted immaturely at some games in Houston,” Mallett said Wednesday via ESPN’s Jamison Hensley. “There were reasons for it. But that’s not going to be discussed right now. The best thing probably was for me to be cut.”

Mallett completed 53.1 percent of his passes this season, throwing for 770 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions in six games. The Texans went 1-3 in games he started.

Mallett’s time in Houston was marked with controversy this season. He missed practice after oversleeping the day after being told he was going to be the team’s backup QB; he missed a team flight and had to fly to Miami for a game; and as this video shows, he had terrible body language after being benched against the Colts.

Mallett, 27, clearly showed immaturity with the Texans, and it’s hard to believe that he would turn it all around in a matter of months. But reports say he did attend counseling to improve as a person.

The bottom line is the Ravens are desperate at QB. When you’re down to Matt Schaub and Jimmy Clausen at the most important position on the field, you’ll try anything.
