Wild video shows FOX SkyCam getting drilled by deflected pass

SkyCam getting hit by a football

The mounted SkyCam above the field at every NFL game is typically mounted high enough that it is not in danger of getting hit with any errant passes or kicks. That was not the case during Sunday’s game between the Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

During the first quarter of Sunday’s game, Jets QB Justin Fields released a pass that inadvertently drilled Cowboys edge rusher Dante Fowler Jr. directly in the facemask. That sent the ball flying in the air wildly, where it wobbled directly into the SkyCam monitoring the play.

Interestingly, the officials seemingly misapplied the rule about the SkyCam interfering with play. This pass was ruled incomplete, but by rule, a ball that hits the SkyCam or its wire during play is supposed to lead to the play being whistled dead and replayed. This is not the first time we have seen something like this, but in this instance, the rule was simply not applied when it should have been.

Ultimately, the camera itself was unharmed, as the deflection took the velocity out of the pass. It may have actually saved Fields from an interception.

The play had no long-term negative impacts for the Cowboys, who wound up blowing the Jets out. It made for interesting viewing, though.
