Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken expertly danced around a baity question about quarterback Deshaun Watson.
On Monday, a reporter tried to get Monken’s thoughts on Watson, whom the first-year Browns head coach supposedly said has been better than Shedeur Sanders. But that was where Monken cut off Schudel, saying that he never made such a claim.
“Oh, I don’t think I said he’s better than Shedeur,” Monken responded. “I’m not sure I went that far, but I appreciate you trying to trap me in that s–t.”
The quarterback battle between Watson and Sanders is easily one of the most compelling storylines of any training camp, and it is expected to continue until at least Monken and the Browns announce their starter for Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season.
Cleveland does not need to add more drama to an already intriguing QB battle. Monken may or may not think that Watson is the better option than Sanders, but it is not necessary for him to say so publicly, at least for the time being.
But even without asking him, there are clear reasons why Cleveland should go with Watson. For one, he has the edge in experience over second-year pro Sanders. Plus, the Browns are not paying him a ton of money to play second fiddle to a much younger teammate when he is healthy and able to play.
The 30-year-old Watson has appeared in only 19 games through three seasons so far with Cleveland, amassing only 1,186 passing yards and 19 touchdowns with 12 interceptions.
