Tom Coughlin: Jaguars never had interest in Colin Kaepernick

Colin Kaepernick Castro

The Jacksonville Jaguars have no interest in Colin Kaepernick despite their shaky quarterback situation, and Tom Coughlin won’t explain why.

Coughlin, the team’s vice president of football operations, confirmed Saturday that the Jaguars had no interest in the free agent quarterback, and was evasive when asked what had gone into the decision.

It’s worth noting that Jaguars owner Shad Khan had openly said he’d sanction a Kaepernick signing if the front office wanted him. Ultimately, Coughlin vetoed it. He is a pretty old-fashioned guy, and his reason for avoiding Kaepernick may be similar to the one indirectly voiced by John Elway here — namely that Kaepernick and his politics would be a distraction. As it stands, Jacksonville will send Blake Bortles out there as the starter once the season gets underway, for better or worse.
