Trey Burton released by Bears

The Chicago Bears are moving on from tight end Trey Burton.

As first reported by NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the Bears have released Burton after just two seasons of his original four-year deal.

Burton was as advertised in the first year of his deal, catching six touchdowns for Chicago in 2018. Injuries limited him greatly in 2019, as he caught just 14 passes all season and was largely a non-factor in the Bears’ offense.

Burton’s base salary for 2020 was set to be $6.7 million, making him one of the highest-paid tight ends in the sport. Given his limited production, the Bears certainly couldn’t justify that expense, especially after bringing in Jimmy Graham earlier in the offseason.
