Ty Simpson has addressed his ongoing competition with Stetson Bennett for the backup role behind Matthew Stafford.
The Los Angeles Rams rookie spoke to reporters Saturday following a stellar preseason debut against the Kansas City Chiefs. Simpson went 21/25 for 190 yards with a pair of touchdowns in a 20-12 win at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.
The Alabama alum also became the first QB to record 190 passing yards and 2 touchdowns in his preseason debut since Baker Mayfield did it with the Cleveland Browns in 2018.
But Simpson didn’t let the early success, preseason or otherwise, get to his head. When asked about competing with Bennett for the QB2 role, Simpson brushed the thought aside.
“I really don’t get into that, honestly,” Simpson told reporters, via ESPN’s Sarah Barshop. “I really just try to be the best version of myself I can be and compete with myself.
“A lot of the time, people get caught up in ‘who is better than who’ and ‘who is going to get this spot’ and stuff. But at the end of the day, I’m just trying to prepare me for the future and try to stack days and [make] progress.”
The 23-year-old also heard praise for his performance Saturday from Rams head coach Sean McVay, who stated Simpson “did a really good job” in his first taste of NFL action.
McVay infamously looked less than enthused when the Rams drafted Simpson with the 13th overall pick in April, so much so that he later had to address his “grumpy” behavior.
Simpson didn’t give his coach anything to pout about during Saturday’s win.
