New Orleans Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu has announced a shocking decision about his career.

The veteran safety revealed Tuesday that he is retiring from the NFL, effective immediately. In a statement posted to his Instagram, Mathieu confirmed his decision, though he did not offer any details on what went into his decision.

“As I hang up my cleats, I’m filled with gratitude as I close this chapter of my life and officially retire from the game that’s shaped me in every way,” Mathieu wrote.

Saints GM Mickey Loomis admitted that Mathieu’s decision had come as a surprise to the team, and that the organization had only found out in the last few days.

Loomis says they'll look to potentially add a safety.

Mathieu turned 33 in May and had not shown any inclination toward retiring. He had one year remaining on the two-year contract extension he signed prior to the 2024 season.

The former LSU star had a very successful NFL career with four separate teams. He won a Super Bowl title with the Kansas City Chiefs and received first-team All-Pro honors three times during his 12-year career.

Mathieu spent the last three seasons of his career in his hometown of New Orleans with the Saints. He was a starter with them for all three years, and had 62 total tackles and three interceptions for the team last season.
