Tyrann Mathieu unlikely to back with Cardinals next season?

Tyrann Mathieu

Has Tyrann Mathieu worn out his welcome with the team that drafted him?

NFL reporter Jason La Canfora said on Friday that he would be “very surprised” if the former Pro Bowl safety returned to the Arizona Cardinals next season based on the rumblings at this week’s NFL Scouting Combine.

The 25-year-old Mathieu has been with Arizona for his entire career since being drafted by them in 2013. He started all 16 games for them last season, recording 78 combined tackles, seven pass deflections, and two interceptions.

Mathieu is owed a base salary of $5.75 million in 2018, which will become fully guaranteed (along with $8 million of his $10.75 million salary for 2019) on Mar. 14, per Spotrac. He is also due a $5 million roster bonus on Mar. 16.

It has already been an offseason of unloading for the Cards, and an expensive player with a long injury history like Mathieu may just be next out the door.
