San Francisco 49ers fans can exhale. Vernon Davis will not be holding out of training camp.
On Wednesday morning, Niners defensive back CJ Spillman posted a video on Instagram of the warm reception Davis received from his teammates in the locker room when he arrived.
Davis admitted over a month ago that he is looking for a new contract. He skipped voluntary offseason workouts and was expected to skip training camp if he didn’t get a new deal, but he has either had a change of heart or worked something out with the team’s front office.
As Pro Football Talk noted, offensive lineman Joe Staley also wanted a new contract but showed up to workouts. He was rewarded with a two-year extension that will keep him with the team through 2019. Perhaps Davis took note of the way Staley’s contract negotiations went, or maybe he was bothered by Jim Harbaugh’s comments about the “49er way.” In any event, Davis will not be fined $30,000 per day for missing camp and appears ready to work.
