Report: Washington made ‘identical’ offers to Kirk Cousins two months apart

It was no surprise that Kirk Cousins did not agree to a long-term contract with Washington before the deadline for franchise tagged players back in July, but questions remain about how hard the team actually tried to get a deal done.

According to a report from Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Cousins was not pleased with how Washington president Bruce Allen handled contract negotiations. A big reason for that was that Cousins was offered the exact same contract in July that he was extended two months prior in May.

Sources told Rapoport that Allen met with Cousins’ agent, Mike McCartney, for drinks at some point after Cousins turned down the team’s offer in May. After that, Allen flew to meet with Cousins and his father in what was described as a “very positive meeting.” The executive informed Cousins that another offer would be coming, but it ended up being the same exact deal Washington offered in May. Despite talks seemingly progressing, the numbers went nowhere.

While Cousins has maintained that he would like to finish his career in Washington, you have to wonder if the reports about the quarterback’s relationship with his boss are true.
