Wes Welker pondering retirement amid concussions, dropoff
Another Bronco may be riding off into the sunset. Not only is Wes Welker unsure if he’ll be back in Denver, he is now thinking of calling it a career.
Welker, slated to become a free agent next month, has told those close to him that he is considering retirement, according to a report from FOXSports.com’s Mike Garafolo. No final decision has been made, but Welker is at least giving it serious thought after numerous concussions and a dropoff in production in 2014.
The 33-year-old receiver is coming off his worst season since his rookie year in 2005, having caught just 49 balls for 464 yards. He was suspended for the first two games of the season because of a positive drug test and also suffered his third concussion in two years with Denver during the preseason.
The Broncos are also awaiting word on whether Peyton Manning will return to Denver, although speculation emerged Tuesday that the decision might not be all Manning’s. With a new head coach and big contract decisions looming for Demaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas, the potent Broncos offense could be in for a major makeover this summer.
