Adam Scott nearly missed his tee time at AT&T National after oversleeping

Adam Scott did not shoot particularly well at the opening round of the AT&T National on Thursday, but all things considered he has to be pleased with his score. After oversleeping, he barely made it to the 10th hole (where he was scheduled to start) in time to avoid a two-stroke penalty or a disqualification. Scott had an 8:08 a.m. tee time and found himself scrambling when he woke up at 7:20 a.m. with a fairly long drive ahead of him.

“Luckily, I had ironed my clothes the night before,” Scott joked according to Golf.com.

Scott arrived at the course at 7:55 a.m., so obviously he had no time to warm up at the range before teeing off. He hit a lousy shot into the bunker with a 4-iron on the 10th hole — a hole some argue is the most difficult on the course — but was able to get up and down for par. He finished the day with a 75, which still has him above the projected cut line.

So how did this happen? Scott said the AT&T National gave all the players new phones as a gift, so he switched over from his old phone and instead used the new one for an alarm. Perhaps he should have consulted the owner’s manual.

“Obviously, it was a bit more complicated,” he said. “I don’t know if I didn’t hear it or if I didn’t set the alarm right.”

He may have had to go into his opening round ice cold, but Scott was luckier than Jim Furyk in that oversleeping didn’t cost him his spot in the tournament field. Maybe Adam is a better driver.
