Bryson DeChambeau on Sunday won his second US Open, and he paid tribute to the late Payne Stewart following his win.
DeChambeau’s win at Pinehurst No. 2 came four years after he captured his first major, which was the 2020 US Open at Winged Foot. DeChambeau’s win also comes 25 years after Stewart won the 1999 US Open, also held at Pinehurst No. 2.
DeChambeau was a big fan of Stewart, who died in a plane accident later in 1999. DeChambeau played college golf at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in part because that’s where Stewart played. DeChambeau also wore flat caps while golfing just like Stewart.

After making par on the 72nd hole to seal his victory, DeChambeau shouted out Stewart amid his celebration. He pointed to a sticker on the back of his cap that had Stewart’s silhouette. DeChambeau then pointed to the sky.
“That’s Payne right there, baby,” DeChambeau said as he pointed to the sticker.

In an interview with NBC’s Mike Tirico, DeChambeau said he was dedicating his Father’s Day win to his late dad, who died in 2022. DeChambeau also said his victory was dedicated to Stewart.
“He’s the reason why I went to SMU. He’s the reason why I wore the cap,” DeChambeau said.
DeChambeau is now the fourth golfer to win the US Amateur and multiple US Opens, joining Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. That is some elite company.
