Qatar helping Capitals fans by paying for subway to run late after Game 4

Washington Capitals fans will be able to ride the subway after Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals thanks to Qatar.

Subway service around the Washington D.C. area stops at 11:30 pm during the week, which can obviously be a problem for sporting events that may start after 8:00.

There should be no problems on Thursday for the game between the Capitals and Tampa Bay Lightning. D.C. council member Jack Evans told The Washington Post that the nation of Qatar has agreed to pay the $100,000 that is required for the subway to run an extra hour. The Post noted that Qatar has invested in different projects around D.C. in recent years, with this being their latest venture to support the city.

In 2016, the Washington Nationals announced on their video board during a playoff game that the Metro system was keeping its regular closing time and received a chorus of boos. During last year’s playoff series between the Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs, many fans were forced to leave Game 2 when it was tied 3-3 in overtime because metro service was ending soon. The Capitals went on to lose 4-3 in double overtime. Issues have also been caused for fans attending primetime Redskins games.

Exelon and Pepco combined to provide service after Game 3 on Tuesday, which the Caps lost 4-2. They still lead the series 2-1.
