Sharks acquire Gustav Nyquist in trade with Red Wings
Gustav Nyquist is headed to San Jose.
Nyquist agreed on Sunday to waive his no-trade clause so he could be dealt to the Sharks. The Detroit Red Wings announced the news on Twitter, saying they have received a 2019 2nd-round pick and conditional 2020 third-round pick in the deal.

Nyquist is making $5.5 million this year, which is the last of his contract. Detroit wanted to get some draft picks for him rather than lose him for nothing in free agency. The Red Wings only have 55 points and are in contention for the worst overall record in the league, so it made sense for them to trade him while rebuilding.
Nyquist, who has spent his entire career with Detroit, has 48 points in 61 games this season and needs six more points to match his single-season high. This is a big pickup for San Jose, which is currently second in the West with 82 points.
