MMA referee Leon Roberts showed us that there is much more to officiating an MMA fight than you probably realized. Sometimes, the job calls for you to get physical.
Case in point: the fight Roberts reffed between Nathias Frederick and Ahmad Aswad on April 26. Frederick delivered a knockout punch on Aswad and jumped on his opponent. Roberts realized immediately that Aswad was knocked out, so he rushed over to stop the fight. He had to get physical when Frederick wouldn’t stop punching Aswad despite already winning the fight. So Roberts wrestled Frederick away, got both hooks in, and nearly applied a rear naked choke on the fighter to subdue him.
That was enough to shake Frederick out of his “kill” mode and get him back to life. Awesome job by Roberts … and sick moves!
