Michael Phelps was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence in Maryland early Tuesday morning.
TMZ reports that Phelps was pulled over at around 1:40 a.m. and failed a field sobriety test. A breathalyzer reportedly revealed that his BAC was nearly twice the legal limit. Law enforcement officials said Phelps was pulled over for driving 84 mph in a 45-mph zone. He was charged with DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines.
Phelps was already arrested for DUI in Maryland once in 2004. The 18-time Olympic gold medalist was 19 at the time and plead guilty in exchange for 18 months probation.
There have been rumors that Phelps is considering a comeback at the Rio Olympics in 2016. He rejoined the US drug-testing program last November, which would be a step toward making himself eligible for competition.
Phelps, who said he was retired from competitive swimming in 2012, has never been shy about his love for partying.
