Livorno midfielder Piermario Morosini dies after collapsing on pitch during match (Video)
The soccer world is in mourning after Livorno midfielder Piermario Morosini collapsed on the pitch from cardiac arrest on Saturday and later died.
Morosini fell to the ground at the 31st minute during a Serie B match at Pescara. A doctor at the hospital where Morosini was taken to said the 25-year-old, who had been on loan from Serie A squad Udinese, was dead upon arrival. Livorno held a 2-0 lead before the contest was suspended. Matches across the country have been postponed in wake of the news of the Morosini’s death.
The scene on the pitch after Morosini collapsed was terrifying. The Livorno bench became hysterical as it tried to get the attention of the referee. Members of both sides were visibly upset as medical crews scrambled to give aide. A defibrillator was used on Morosini, along with CPR. He reportedly was still conscious as he left the pitch.
This tragedy comes nearly a month after Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba suffered cardiac arrest during an FA Cup match in London. Muamba fell into a coma but ultimately survived. He is still under intensive care.
