Darren Clarke is Giving Up Drinking for the Back Nine of His Career

January 20, 2012 by Steve DelVecchio • Comments

Before Darren Clarke won the British Open last July, the remainder of his career did not look very promising.  In fact, Clarke’s manager admitted weeks later that Darren desperately needed to win the tournament after a series of failed investments left him in poor financial condition.  In addition to providing him with a stack of cash, he says the win revived his career.  In order to get the most out of the remainder of his days on the course, Clarke claims he has taken a number of steps toward getting into better shape — including giving up drinking. Have a look at what he wrote on his blog on Monday in a post entitled “Lean Mean Fighting Machine:”

The 2nd January 2012 has also seen the appointment of Jonny Bloomfield as my new fitness trainer. I’ve been pontificating about my fitness for a while and Jonny, who is based in Belfast, was recommended to me by Lee’s trainer, Steve MacGregor. My golf career has been extended somewhat by winning the Open Championship and I just thought that enough is enough and it was time to get myself into better shape. Jonny’s a sports scientist and he’s got me doing all sorts in the gym, having my eyes checked out, nutrition etc. Therefore my alcohol consumption is taking a massive dint…..currently down to zero! However, no pain, no gain and I’m very excited about the route that we’re going down  – it’s a long road but I will give it my best shot.

Clarke then went on to note that he bought himself a new Mercedes before Christmas, so it sounds like he’ll have no problem finding things to fill the void left by his alcohol-free lifestyle.  If he thinks giving up beer will help him take home a couple more purses close to the 990,000 pounds he banked at The Open Championship, the transition should be seamless.

H/T Game On!
