Bill Maher rips Bryce Harper, calls him a d-bag

Bryce Harper

Bill Maher is not a fan of Bryce Harper and made that very clear during a radio interview.

Maher, a comedian and political commentator who has hosted “Real Time with Bill Maher” on HBO for over a decade, is also a baseball fan and part-owner of the New York Mets. Since he’s invested in the Mets, it’s no surprise that he’s not a big fan of his rival’s best player.

During a radio interview with WOR’s Pete McCarthy Wednesday, Maher revealed his dislike of the reigning NL MVP.

“You know, I’m not a big Bryce Harper fan,” Maher told McCarthy. “There’s a couple of words that I really can’t say on public radio that I think apply to him. Next to those words in the dictionary I see a picture of Bryce Harper. I just don’t like that guy at all, so it’s no surprise to me that he’s flirting with Donald Trump’s candidacy.”

Maher’s mention of Trump is a reference to Harper wearing this hat after a game.

Asked to expound upon his dislike of Harper, Maher shared more.

“I think it’s a lot about the hair gel,” said Maher. “He looks like a certain product that Massengil makes.”

McCarthy didn’t understand Maher’s reference to Massengil, so Maher was forced to clarify.

“He’s a d–che! He looks like a d—–bag! I just don’t like him.”

Maher did acknowledge his bias against Harper has to do with the outfielder playing for the Washington Nationals.

“Well of course if he was a Met I’d love him. I could learn to love Bryce Harper, let’s put it this way,” said Maher.

Maher notes that his dislike of Harper is not permanent and that he expects the 23-year-old to mature.

“In a few years I think he will mature. When you’re that young and you’re that good, you’re going to be a d–k. … There is something about him that is very arrogant. But with some guys, the confidence tips over into an unattractive quality.”

Harper has been viewed as a controversial figure since he was first drafted. Between his flair, hair, outspoken nature and behavior on the field, he has a tendency to rub people the wrong way — even his own teammates. Maher certainly isn’t the first person to dislike Harper, and he won’t be the last.
