Christian Yelich undecided about attending mandatory Marlins FanFest

Christian Yelich

The standoff between the Miami Marlins and Christian Yelich may soon be coming to a head.

Yelich’s agent Joe Longo said on Wednesday that the Marlins outfielder is undecided about attending the team’s FanFest event on Feb. 10, per Jerry Crasnick of ESPN. Crasnick also adds that attendance is mandatory and that Yelich could be subjected to a fine from the Marlins if he is not present for it.

Yelich’s future with the team has come into question this offseason amidst a mass firesale by new Marlins ownership that has already seen them sell off the likes of Dee Gordon, Marcell Ozuna, and Giancarlo Stanton. At first, they seemed hesitant to also trade away the 26-year-old Yelich, who hit .281 with 18 home runs and 81 RBIs for them last season.

However, Yelich is clearly not pleased with the direction that the franchise is headed in, and a no-show at Marlins FanFest could bring the situation to a boiling point, assuming that he is still on the team by then.
