Giancarlo Stanton hit in face by pitch (Video)
Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins has put his name squarely in the National League MVP discussion with the best season of his young career in 2014.
The 24-year-old has more than done his part to keep the Marlins in the hunt for a wild card spot and came into Thursday leading the NL in home runs (37), walks (94), and slugging percentage (.554). Stanton also leads the majors with 105 RBI.
After Thursday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers, Stanton’s health will be the main concern of most, not his MVP candidacy.
In the fifth inning, Stanton was hit in the left cheek by a pitch from Mike Fiers and was carted off the field.

Umpires determined Stanton swung on the pitch, so he wasn’t even credited with a hit-by-pitch. Reed Johnson came in to replace Stanton and was hit on the hand with the very first pitch he saw, prompting both benches to clear.
Marlins third baseman Casey McGehee and manager Mike Redmond were both ejected.
Marlins reliever Anthony DeSclafani was also ejected after hitting Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez with a pitch.
LBS wishes Giancarlo Stanton a full and speedy recovery.
