This statistic will infuriate New York Mets fans

Jacob deGrom

The unluckiness Jacob deGrom has dealt with all season has been a big topic of discussion among baseball fans, but one particular stat will leave New York Mets fans furious.

On Saturday night against the Tigers, Chicago White Sox starter Lucas Giolito pitched seven innings, allowing just three hits and one run. He picked up the win to push him over .500 for the season at 10-9. Giolito also lowered his ERA to a bloated 5.85.

Giolito’s 5.85 ERA is the worst among all qualified starters in all of baseball. Yet he has 10 wins and a winning record.

On the flip side is deGrom, whose 1.71 ERA is the best among all qualified starters in all of baseball. Yet he only has eight wins all season and at 8-8 does not even have a winning record.

This stat is just another weapon for fans who say wins are not important. How meaningful can records be if the pitcher with the best ERA in the league has a better record than the one with the worst? Despite all this, deGrom says his lack of run support does not bother him.
