Larry Lucchino stepping down as Red Sox CEO

Larry Lucchino

Larry Lucchino is stepping down as CEO of the Red Sox, the Boston Globe reported Saturday.

“I’ll be 70 in September. That’s sort of why I’m ready to step back,’’ Lucchino told The Globe’s Dan Shaughnessy.

Lucchino has been with the Red Sox for all three of their World Series wins since 2004. He was brought in by the Red Sox ownership group that purchased the team in 2002 and has been lauded by John Henry as the best hire by the team. Lucchino previously worked as President/CEO of the San Diego Padres and Baltimore Orioles.

Red Sox COO Sam Kennedy is expected to replace Lucchino as CEO.

“There’s been a longstanding transition plan in place for when Larry was ready to take a step back from the day-to-day. I know what a privilege it is to work for the Red Sox. I grew up a mile from Fenway and I fully embrace the responsibility that will come with this opportunity. I’m grateful to Larry for his mentorship and John and Tom for their confidence in me,” Kennedy said via The Boston Herald.

The Red Sox are currently last place in the AL East, marking the third time in four seasons that they are at the bottom of the division.
