Ron Washington: Comparing Mike Trout to Willie Mays has to stop

Angels rookie outfielder Mike Trout is an insanely good athlete. After spending much of the first month of the season in the minors, Trout has wasted no time figuring out how to wear out Major League pitching and make an impact on the game. In 74 games, Trout is leading the American League with a .357 average, 31 stolen bases, 70 runs scored and an on-base percentage of .412. He has also added 15 homers and 47 RBI and played tremendous defense in center field.

For all the aforementioned reasons and more, folks are already comparing the 20-year-old phenom to Willie Mays. Rangers manager Ron Washington says that has to stop.

“He’s not Willie Mays,” Washington said after a loss to the Angels on Sunday according to ESPN.com. “He’s a pretty good player, but I think the comparisons have to stop. Let the kid play. When he’s been here five years, six years, then you can start doing that.”

I couldn’t agree more. Trout is obviously a phenomenal talent with incredible potential as he has shown with plays like this one, but Mays is arguably the best all-around player to ever play the game. As amazing as it is that Trout has already shown he is a five-tool player after just over 100 total Major League starts, that could also mean opposing pitchers have yet to figure him out. Mays played over 20 seasons, hit 660 home runs and drove in nearly 2,000. If Trout continues to produce at a high level for about 1,500-2,000 more games, then the comparisons to Mays would be slightly more justified.

Pretty Good?? Hes better than pretty good! The salt from all those sunflower seeds are pickling your brain.

Lol @ Willie being the best all-around baseball player.

Willie Mays may be in the running for best position player ever, but Babe Ruth was best all around because he mastered both hitting and pitching.  His scoreless innings streak in the World Series lasted longer than his 60 home run record and he was 5-2 against Walter Johnson, who many consider one of the best pitchers ever.

Washington is a racist. If Trout was Black, he would be singing his praises, especially if Trout was being compared to Mantle.

I don’t see why the comparisons need to stop. It’s not like it’s putting too much pressure on Trout. He ignores it.

Wash is a baseball guy. he would never do anything to diminish the game. he would never compare a rookie to a legend. Trout is a pretty good ball player and if he turns out to be half as good as Mays then baseball is better for it.

That’s not fair.  Washington has done nothing to show that he is a racist.

When a professional says another is “Pretty Good” he means they are outstanding. Not been around the game long I would guess..

To those who know the game Willy Mays is in-comparable…..

  • bigfoot300

It’s too early for these comparisons. Mays, Aaron, Ruth, Mantle, Clemente,…no one should be mentioned in those terms until they’ve done it for years, not weeks.

all stats about Willie would be even more astronomical if his play wasn’t interrupted by military service in ’52 and ’53.  He came back in ’54 with 41 homers and batted .345

Really? Nobody did what Mays did on a ballfield, and I’m not talking about  numbers.  When Trout scores from 1st base on a single I will pay attention. Mays played 5 years in a ballpark who’s centerfield was 483 ft from home plate and no ball was ever hit over his head. Greatest D OF of all time and Dimaggio once said he had the greatest throwing arm he had ever seen. I saw it. I agree. There were better hitters, but no one came as close to a perfect ballplayer as Mays.

What a dumbass thing to say….you dont know Ron Washington…Having watched him closely since he joined the Rangers I could tell you he is far from racist. Ask any player on his team!
