Home plate umpire Paul Emmel had to leave Thursday night’s game between the Oakland A’s and Los Angeles Angels after he was hit in the head with a bat and suffered a nasty cut.
Angels third baseman Jefry Marte lost control of his bat on a swing and miss in the bottom of the ninth, and it hit Emmel on the top of the head where he had no protection. It was a frightening scene as Emmel had to leave the game.
Fortunately, reports indicated that Emmel only needed stitches and was expected to be fine. It could have been a lot worse with the way the bat hit him. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery.
