Green, 29, averaged 7.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists for the Spurs last year and is a career 40.3 percent shooter from deep. Though wildly inconsistent at times, the UNC product’s perimeter defense and his ability to stretch the floor have long been a valuable component of San Antonio’s gameplan on both ends.
With the Spurs set to open the season on October 25 against the Golden State Warriors, Green, who underwent LASIK eye surgery over the offseason in the hopes of bouncing back from his down 2015-16 campaign, could miss the first ten games or so of the regular season if his recovery timetable holds true. Jonathon Simmons, Kyle Anderson, as well as newcomers Davis Bertans and Livio Jean-Charles could all see increased opportunity in Green’s absence, as the Spurs may want to keep Manu Ginobili in his customary sixth man role.
