Kobe Bryant Throws Towel in Lamar Odom’s Face (Video)

At least when LeBron James disrespectfully bumped into Erik Spoelstra he was somewhat subtle about it.  The same can’t be said for Kobe Bryant.  The Lakers had a tough time beating the Thunder on Sunday afternoon, and Lamar Odom’s poor free throw shooting at the end of the game made things tougher than they had to be.  After he missed back-to-back free throws that could have iced the game and put the Lakers up five, you would think his teammates would give him a smack on the butt and say something like “don’t worry, we’ll pick you up.”  Instead, L.A.’s leader threw a towel in his face.  Check out the video of Kobe Bryant throwing a towel in Lamar Odom’s face, courtesy of Black Sports Online via SI Hot Clicks:

The Lakers were able to hang on and win the game anyway, but unless that was some sort of inside joke from Kobe to Lamar there’s no need for it.  It’s one thing to get on a teammate about mental mistakes or losing his cool and costing the team.  Odom obviously wanted to hit the free throws.  Props to him for not smacking Kobe in front of a national audience.

Complaining about it and calling him an a-hole are two completely different things. You’re right, antics like these keep us employed. And since they aren’t going to stop, we’ll keep doing what we’re doing and calling them a-holes for them.

Remember when Rasheed Wallace threw a towel at Arvydas Sabonis? Right in the face! Someone please look that up and post a link…….it’s not on Youtube.

I watched this live and what I got from it was Kobe telling him to wake up, get over it and get ready to play defense. In fact, I think you can see him say “let’s go.” It’s definitely not about the free throws. Those guys have been close for years, Kobe was the first player to call Lamar when his son passed away. They know each other well and are friends. No need to make a big deal about this.

    so what?

Part of what makes Kobe who he is, and a difficult teammate. He makes lofty demands of his teammates and isn’t the most friendly guy around. It’s just how he is. Problem is Odom is such a wussy there’s no way he would have responded. Kobe was picking on the weak!

Ryan Phillips has interpreted that scene the way I interpreted it. What Kobe is doing here is to cheer Odom up. Kobe is telling Odom to forget about the missed throws because they have a job to do (a game to win). A keen observer would notice that Odom was letting the missed free throws get the better of him (his head is down, he is still seated when his fellow players are standing around the coach for final tips, etc), and Kobe (being the great leader he is) thought it wise to cheer him up. The towel is a sign of comradeship here i.e. wipe your sweat, let us go back, we have unfinished business.
