Tyronn Lue: Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving need to focus on the team, not their brand

Tyronn Lue

Tyronn Lue is certainly stamping his authority on the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The newly-anointed coach said that his star players, namely Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving, need to worry about their team and put less emphasis on their brands.

“With our young stars, with Kyrie and Kevin, they’re young, so it’s still about their brand and different things, it’s just way different,” Lue told the media on Saturday, via Cleveland.com’s Joe Vardon.

On Monday, Lue said that he’d addressed the entire team with that message.

“I talked to our team about, ‘if you win, everybody’s brand is better,'” Lue said. “If you win as a unit, everybody gets credit for it. Just trying to keep instilling that in our guys because, you know, we still have a young group of guys. Just gotta keep instilling that message. If we win, everybody’s taken care of, so that’s the message.”

It’s difficult to imagine David Blatt saying this to his team, especially since he was reportedly soft on his stars. Lue seems willing to hold even the big names accountable in Cleveland. If you believe the reports that came out of Blatt’s locker room, this is an improvement.
