Vanessa Bryant: ‘I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can’t win championships’

In addition to giving the Lakers a better chance to win an NBA championship, the acquisitions of Dwight Howard and Steve Nash may actually help Kobe Bryant’s marriage. But how? As you probably know, Kobe and Vanessa Bryant have been trying to reconcile their marriage since earlier in the summer. As far as we know, they have not gotten all the way there yet. Judging by what Vanessa said she looks for in a partner, winning another ring this season could work in Kobe’s favor.

According to Nicki Jhabvala of Sports on Earth (via The Basketball Jones), Vanessa had the following to say during an interview with New York Magazine:

“I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can’t win championships,” she said. “If you’re sacrificing time away from my family and myself for the benefit of winning championships, then winning a championship should happen every single year.”

If she said this a few months ago we could have made a solid LeBron James joke, but now it wouldn’t really be appropriate.

It’s pretty obvious Vanessa is only interesting in being with a winner. Kobe has five championship rings, but perhaps a sixth could go a long way toward making his wife forget about these pictures from London. Forget tying M.J. — Kobe needs to win his wife back.

UPDATE: Vanessa Bryant has backtracked from her comments. Here’s her statement.

If the quote Vanessa said are accurate, then she must have thinks so highly about herself. All she have to do is flick her finger and all the available  bachelor will be dashing to her feet. She must have feel so important and desirable. Just hopping she wont sprain her arm patting her back herself .

Good to know that she cares a lot about the qualities of her partner.  And by “cares a lot about the qualities of her partner” I mean a fame chasing skank who wants to be the next Kim K.  What exactly as she done?

I think what Vanessa was truly trying to say is that winning the championship makes all the time that Kobe spends away from their family bearable. Of course if he is working as much and as hard as he is and sacrificing that family time, you want him winning – otherwise what’s the point? He may as well get another job that will allow him to be home with his wife & kids.

Now I aint saying shes a gold digger…But you all know the rest.

  • Kandace Davis

I think Vanessa was saying that the reason she was given for why her family had to spend time apart was that he had to win championships. If that’s the reason you’re given and your husband actually wins championships, then the time apart is justified. But if he tells you that’s why he can’t be home, yet he never wins any championships, it’s hard to accept that. He might as well have been home with his family.

Random, sort of off-base analogy: that’s being married to a farmer who says he can’t come home because he’s out milking cows all day. If he doesn’t come home with milk, what the hell was he gone all that time for?

I see where she’s coming from. Doesn’t sound like a gold digger to me. She didn’t mention money once. Give her a break.

But wait – SHE hasnt won any Championships – how can she look Kobe in the eye knowing HE’S doing something she wouldnt?

  • Wil H

And had he been “home with his family” (read: broke) how long do you think she would have stayed.

She MAY be trying to say what youre driving at but if so she really needs to learn to articulate better because to most people it isnt coming across like that.

Then again he cheated, she split, he gave her a mansion and she came back – yeah it doesnt sound to me like shes in it for the money at all

I’m trying to give Mrs. Kobe Bryant the benefit of the doubt.  But yes, the phrasing of her quote is rather unfortunate.  When you first read it, she sounds like she doesn’t really support her husband’s career, and that she will leave him if the Lakers fall out of contention.

How many players are winning championships, and most of them are already married. Some unmarred would maybe not  consider her as a potential bride anyway. With limited champion stud roaming  around she probably would
     ended an old maid.

that crazy thing i have ever read…… she expect him to win other nba champsion in order for him and her to be back together….. win champsion will not love……. love will buy love… money will not buy love.. duh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what a whore she is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. no one is perfect!!!!!!!! scoff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  That mean Kobe must win NBA champion  every year till Kobe die on earth planet???????? That mean it will 50-60 more years????? If that is the fact then she is crazy…. Dump her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1  let her marry to homeless and she will see how she feel…… relationship is based on love, honest, communication NOT MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But you will stay married to someone that’s clearly not into being married to you. lol
Sometime it’s just best to keep your mouth shut when your life is a mess and hon your marriage is a mess. Get that together worry about championships later.

  • http://twitter.com/Alyssaand1D AlyssaM. :D

As soon as Kobe won that 1st championship, she already had everything she could ever want for her and the kids, for the rest of their lives, except of course, him.

She only meant that it’s not worth being away from your family  for so long especially in the NBA where in every city there’s literally ho’s after ho’s lined up outside the stadium for blocks  trying to give up that one night koochie at all cost.

Also because it makes wives lonely. But of course their is always Sancho! Her fault too because she should have known that this is how it’s always been.

Maybe she should spend more time “polishing” his trophies so he won’t chase tail in other cities.

Vanessa is a drama queen.we all know she’s not ready to give up that piece of change along with that rich lifestyle.how many times can one guy cheat with so many women and gets away with it.Money is power and it’s simple she just can’t let go…kobe my-man you’re my hero.

What has she done? He met her on the set of a Sprite Commercial.  She was in High School.  It’s not like she went on to college while he was playing and had her own dreams or goals.  There is nothing wrong with being a wife of someone with money.   She has it twisted though.  She brings looks to the table and nothing else.   No money, no talent, nothing.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/6UZAX47LD6OOZNX6V3UCRZKAKQ straighttalk

She didn’t mention money ? It was implied u idiot..what u think ‘championships’ mean.Plain and simple she wants a man with money..case close.

  • desert3030

Swam across when the water was 2 1/2 feet high. But for the boobs, and more than likely aren’t hers,  she be waiting tables drooling over a $2 tip. Who else would want a Champion like him…rapist.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rlesesne Rena Lesesne

How shallow can a person be? Her comments scream “SELFISH”. She didn’t marry KB for KB, she married for wealth and fame only. Instead of reconciling, he should be running for the hills. Someone tell her outward beauty doesn’t last forever, but inner beauty is infinite.. A shame she’ll never know that. Isn’t there a name for women that give of themselves willfully, for the sake of money alone? Wake up Kobe!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/mario.depaoli.3 Mario DePaoli

She is trash and an ignorant woman!!  Hell, there may me other women that think that, but they would be stupid enough to make the statement to the media!!  All women should be embarassed by this piece of crap!!

Maybe after the divorce she can hook with Derrick Fisher he has as many rings as Kobe…

  • http://www.facebook.com/bill.choice.39 Bill Choice

Btw the rings are team trophys not individuals and of the 5 only one was where Kobe was the main attraction

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/VAWUCRGMRCIWEEW3YZBTEHZZVE Brandon

Wow what a lack of class (not surprising). She has no right to speak on such maters as she hasn’t put in any work in Kobe’s NBA success other than the bedroom… And judging from the Colorado incident obviously not there either. This is a shameful display as many great players win no championships in their careers yet contribute a great deal to the game. I dont expect someone who has accomplished nothing to understand. Just be glad that you got scooped up by a winner. Play your role, and shut up.

Hmmmmm.  So it has nothing to do with the millions of dollars he brings home?  On top of that, there’s the off-season.  I’m sure he’s home much more than the average working joe during the off-season.  But that ain’t enough for Vanessa.  He’s still a loser if he can’t win the championships.  Tell you what Vanessa, I would trade with you… and I’m a straight man!

  • Bowdoin

What the hell does that mean

  • LadiesLoveSports2

Sorry. I don’t agree with what you are saying. I know what you and Vanessa mean, but its still NOT right! She the one that married him. If you loved Kobe, it wouldn’t be about winning a championship. Yes he is working and sacrificing family, but he is taking care of them out of that. The type of money he makes, she should just at least be thankful for that! Especially when you don’t work a damn place ! At the end of the day, a championship EVERY YEAR doesn’t even matter. So what is she trying to say ???? If Kobe was stripped out of his previous championships, she wouldn’t love him, PERIOD!  Honestly, championships shouldn’t even matter. It’s the fact that he is working just to provide for you and your family, so that you sit on your backside all day just for him to bring you the money and you go spend it! I don’t get it, Vanessa!

  • Sergey Bezprozvannyy

This is a non-story. Her husband won 5, so it’s not like she is saying anything bad. And anyways, I am tired of these Housewives who were born gorgeous and then get some celebrity to marry them for a free ride in life. What has she done except spreading and going through labor 3 times? Give me a break.

You were born a man and have female tendencies now right?

  • ajayi calhoun

I disagree totally Kandace people go to work everyday with their main focus being on providing for their family. There are men who are away from their family because of their JOB just as much or more than Kobe. So for her to say that is disrespectful and skankish to me. Besides that the fact that basketball is a team sport is unfair in its self to say that. There are plenty of Hall of Fame players who never won a championship. Are they less of a man or less of a husband or father. Kobe needs to leave that chick alone ( and I say chick but I want to say otherwise ) What has she brought to the table besides a womb????

  • Annette Brown

As someone wise once said, (and I’m paraphrasing because I don’t know the exact quote) “better to have people believe you are ignorant then to open your mouth and remove all doubt.” Shut up, Vanessa.  Just be rich with your cosmetically altered face and don’t do anymore interviews.  Geez

The sarcasm and bitterness in her statement wouldn’t be discernible to the basement-dwelling virgins of the internet. We’re talking about a “man” who has wrecked his family and betrayed his true love in the most embarrassing and stupid of ways.

People also saying she cares about the money. Go google “Vanessa Bryant estimated divorce settlement”

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003505135257 Ramone DeCurta

Vanessa is being taken too literally.  She’s speaking like a housewife who just wants her husband’s time away from home to be worth it.  One way that worth is exemplified is in the championships he wins, which are what he purportedly competes for.

Secondly, her remarks are actually reflective of the way all females of all animal species live.  In any species (Homo Sapiens included), females tend to seek out the males who demonstrate their dominance, i.e. their skills at providing and protecting.  In all animal species, males demonstrate their dominance by competing with other males, often in physical contests or sports.  male gazelles or cheetahs race other males, and the famels will choose to mate with only the males who win those races.  Lions fight each other to the death to win female lionesses.  This is natural, more specifically, Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection at work, and almost all human females act in accordance with it.

Because human beings are more highly evolved, we are able to demonstrate our “dominance” on a variety of ways, through sports, physical combat, arts, politics, science, or just plain intellect, but the rules still apply.  Strong performances in those endeavors and/or strong “fruits” (money, championships, political power, etc.) resulting from them are intoxicating to females, and they choose the mates who can best provide those fruits – especially when they must spend inordinate amounts of time separated from their male companions.

Those suitors who best demonstrate their abilities to provide and protect – and to a lesser degree, to entertain, educate, etc. – their potential female mates (and their offspring if applicable) will usually win over the pool of potential mates.  I believe this dynamic works in homosexual relationships as well.

You are a jealous person, it seems,  you do not know Mrs Bryant.  Yes, Kobe married her of his own free will. She is his business and he is her business.  What right do you have to call another person you do not know  a vile name?  Get some mental health therapy and all of you that seem to have the same demented problem with Kobe and his wife, not his skank, as she was so freely called.  So sad though, this married couple does not  know  you and others like you and you do not know them either. Get your own lives together and attend to your own “affairs and you will not have the time to call Kobe Bryant’s wife a name that you have added to your vocabulary!

  • cutiepie960

Who cares if being away all this time matters when she took her vows wasn’t it for BETTER OR FOR WORSE???? If i was KOBE i say F-U and leave her SORRY AZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • MDD1

You and all the jealous, demented others need to get some mental health therapy, because you are so envious and hateful about Mr and Mrs Bryant’s marrieage that you are calling her a skank, whore and whatever you learned from your street life or home!  He married her years ago and you are still mourning had groaning over it.   They have money, beautiful daughters, fame, she is beautiful, he is tall, dark and good looking and they are young etc, etc, and on and on.  What have you got?    You sit  at a computer and spew  out your venom about a man’s pretty, young wife that you wish you had and you women wish you had a man like Kobe.  She had sense enough to get a ring and– children s”after he married her.  Did you do the same for your children’s other so called parent???   Yes, the wedding ring, that is what Vanessa Bryant got first with her husband.  She is not waiting to get  the fathers of her children to marry her after she has “several” children!!!   Ladies and Gentlemen, compare your lives to the Bryant’s situation.  Are you rich, are you perfect, is your man or woman perfect or faithful. are  you still together, married, shacking up, and on and on. Are your children fed and healthy, loved, cared for.  I hope you get the “thesis of  this message.   Oh, and don’t forget to pray and look to the real God for guidance, not the other one, you might know the one–BELOW!!!
