Nebraska coach bans players from their own locker room
The Nebraska men’s basketball team was ranked in the top 25 in both the AP Poll and USA Today Coaches Poll before the 2014-2015 season began. It appears the Cornhuskers were extremely overrated.
Losers of their last five games, the Huskers have dropped to below .500 (13-14) for the first time this season. Head coach Tim Miles was disgusted with his team’s latest performance in a loss to Iowa on Sunday, so he decided to ban the players from their own locker room.
“You never want to throw your players under the bus,” Miles told reporters. “But that was beyond disappointing. That’s not what we represent. … We quit easily today, and that’s a great disappointment.”
Nebraska found itself down 26 at halftime on its own home court. Miles felt his team “half-assed it” for most of the game.
As Lee Barfknecht of the Omaha World-Herald noted, Nebraska’s facility at Hendricks Training Complex features multiple big screen TVs, a pool table, a smoothie bar, leather lounge chairs and i-Pod docks in the showers. The Huskers are not permitted to use it until further notice.
“There will be chains on the doors locking it from the outside until further notice,” Miles said.
When asked where the team will dress and get ready for home games, Miles simply said “good luck” and that the Huskers will have to get creative.
While it may not seem like much punishment, we have seen how incredible some of these athletic complexes can be (you can see an example here). A lot of high schoolers use a school’s training facilities as one of the main factors in making their decision. Miles’ players can’t be thrilled.
